Madison Square is nowhere near Madison Square Garden. Madison Square is on 23rd Street between Broadway and Fifth Avenue, while Madison Square Garden is on 34th Street between 7th and 8th Avenues. There was a Madison Square Garden around Madison Square once, but it moved in 1925.
The area was named for President James Madison, and in its early history was a potter’s field. Later, it became the site of an arsenal and a home for juvenile delinquents that was destroyed by fire in 1839. Less than a decade later Madison Square Park was opened, and became host to some of the country’s first baseball games.
Madison Square is in the Flatiron District, and one of its most famous attractions is the Flatiron Building, designed by D.H. Burnham and Company and completed in 1902. Its real name is the Fuller Building, but its shallow, triangle shape called to mind an old fashioned flat iron. The 21 story building was considered a skyscraper until the building of the Met Life Building in 1908, which is 50 stories tall. The Met Life Building has a clock tower with four faces, each with a diameter of twenty six and a half feet. The minute hands weigh one thousand pounds each and the hour hands seven hundred pounds. Nearby is the Building of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court, a beautiful marble building designed by James Brown Lord and built in 1900. Close by is the New York Life Insurance Building, which was built in 1928 from plans by Cass Gilbert, who designed the Woolworth Building.
In the center of all of this is the lively six acre park, and Madison Avenue, which begins on its east side. The area is serviced by several bus lines, and by the N and R subway at the 23rd Street and Broadway station.
